Camp: Traverse City Tech Company Big Winner Under House-passed Department Of Defense Appropriations Bill
June 22, 2004
Washington, DC – U.S. Rep. Dave Camp (R-Midland) announced today that Traverse City-based Electro-Optics Technology (EOT) would greatly benefit from the Department of Defense appropriations bill passed by the House. The bill includes $4 million for TAL Materials of Ann Arbor, which is working collaboratively with EOT and General Electric (GE) to develop the next-generation of ceramic materials used in military armor.
"This is a huge first step in a long process that will benefit not only EOT, but all of Traverse City and Michigan," said Camp. "This money will help solidify our state’s emerging technology industry and keep our military at the forefront of new technology."
The technologies being developed by EOT and TAL can be used for both opaque and transparent armor systems that combine outstanding mechanical, optical and potentially sensing properties for a wide range of uses. This armor is intended to be used for the protection of light and heavy land based combat vehicles, aircrafts and missiles, as well as face and body shields.
The next step in securing the funds will be passage of a DoD appropriations bill by the Senate, which could come as early as this week. Once the Senate passes their version, differences will be worked out in a conference committee before being sent to the President for final signature.
